Sources and methodology
Every legal claim needs a retrievable primary-source citation and a clear generation history.
Primary legal authorities
The evidence set may include current or historical statutes, ordinances, administrative rules, court rules, and published judicial decisions from official sources. Each source record includes its jurisdiction, relevant section, effective dates, retrieval time, and verification status.
Generation methodology
- Resolve the request. Country, state, city, and year are normalized into a canonical request.
- Check the fast path. A validated computed version is reused only while its source manifest and generation policy remain current.
- Build the evidence set. Only approved official primary sources enter the immutable source manifest.
- Draft and check. The seven-section schema requires citations, effective dates, applicability, and coverage gaps. Mechanical and separate review passes test support and limitations.
- Publish or abstain. Unsupported or incomplete output is not published. High-risk or unresolved results are escalated for qualified human review.
Computed-result reuse
Reuse is correctness-gated, not a fixed-time cache. Equivalent requests can share one validated artifact and active generation job. The page keeps the artifact's original generation time and manifest revision; a fast-path response is not described as newly generated. Material source, policy, or correction changes make affected versions ineligible for reuse.
Separate help resources
Agency explanations, tenant handbooks, and advocacy material can help people take a next step. They are labeled as help resources and never used as primary legal citations. Official help is shown only when it matches the requested country, state, and city.
Coverage is not universal
Federal, state, and city sources are mapped separately. When verified material is insufficient, Rentcontrol says so instead of inferring a rule.
Old links are research leads
Archived sources may be outdated, broken, or secondary. They are checked and replaced with the underlying official instrument before use in generation.
